Women's & Children's Shelter - Feasibility & Schematic Design

A study and early design for a purpose-built shelter, reimagining a safe and supportive home for women and children who have experience domestic violence. Relocated from adapted townhouses to a dedicated site, the project envisioned a space of dignity, security, and renewal.

This feasibility and schematic design study explored the relocation of an existing women's and children's shelter from adapted townhouses to a bespoke facility on a city-owned property. The move created an opportunity to design a purpose-built home that responded directly to the needs of women and children recovering from domestic violence.

The vision was to provide more than shelter: to create a place of healing, belonging and hope. The design balanced private and communal spaces - secure rooms for safety and rest, alongside shared areas for gathering, play, and mutual support. Access to natural light, and outdoor space was integral, reinforcing a sense of dignity.

This project reflects the power of architecture to shape environments of safety and care, where vulnerable people can begin to rebuild their lives.
